Sporting KC faces off against Toluca FC only four days after their big win against Chivas Guadalajara. However Toluca being a better ranked team than Chivas in the Liga MX, Sporting would have to work even harder to survive the group stage in the tournament.
First half was under way and both teams struggled to reach each other’s penalty box, until the 23rd minute when Toluca forward Robert Morales passed to his teammate Pedro Raul who was wide open and nearly opened the score for the match. Before being denied by Sporting KC’s goalkeeper John Pulskamp. The heat for this match only got hotter as time went by, as toluca made their way into sporting’s penalty box in the 27th minute. Which led to another shot by Toluca that was inches away from finding the back of the net.
In the 28th minute Sporting KC’s Dany Rosero performed a header to his own goal, opening the scoring for Toluca. Although Sporting KC had scored an own goal, toluca did not settle for a one point lead and ended up scoring a second goal in the 31st minute by Toluca’s Pedro Raul. In the 46th minute Sporting KC’s Felipe Gutierrez made a close shot on goal that bounced off the post, and ended up with Fontas who found the back of the net for Sporting KC. However the offside flag was raised.
Second half was underway with the stakes very high for Sporting KC, having to catch up to Toluca who had a two point lead. Which didn’t stay as a two point lead for very long until the 54th minute, when Toluca’s Pedro Raul passed to Robert Morales in the penalty box who scored the third goal for Toluca FC that night. However Toluca’s offense was not finished just yet with Sporting KC, within the 62nd minute Toluca’s Forward Juan Dominguez was able to outrun the Sporting offense from a free kick by his teammate Valber Huerta. Dominguez made his way past the Sporting Defenders and outsmarted the keeper with a clever fake and scored the fourth goal for Toluca FC.
At this point of the game it was obvious that things were not looking good for Sporting KC. Second half was close to its end with only 30 minutes left and Sporting still had not scored a goal in return. At first glance it would seem that all hope was lost for a Sporting goal, until the 77th minute when William Agada nearly scored with a shot on goal that bounced off the post and came back to him. In which he showed off his drive to score with a header that once again was inches from scoring. In the 87th minute Agada again came back to the penalty box with the same drive as before, this time with a pass from his teammate Roger Espinoza. Agada again made a shot that bounced off the keeper and returned back to him in which he scored with a header.
Toluca was eager to score again within the last few minutes of the match but couldn’t find the back of the post for the fifth time before the final whistle blew. Leaving Sporting KC out of the tournament and Toluca advancing to the round of 16.
